The role of the Governing Body

The governing body has three main roles:-

Governors have considerable responsibilities. They work together as the governing body. They do not manage the school – this is the role of the headteacher and senior management team. They oversee the development of the school to ensure a high standard of education for all pupils.

Strategic

The governing body sets the general direction of the school, looking at how it should develop. This is achieved by reviewing and agreeing policies, targets and priorities and monitoring and reviewing aims and objectives.

Critical Friend

The governing body works with the headteacher to create a clear understanding of the challenges faced in managing the school. The governing body is there to question and challenge in an environment of trust and mutual respect.

Accountability

The governing body has a professional attitude and uses its collective skills to benefit the school. It gathers views, asks questions and decides what is best for the school. The governing body is answerable to parents and the wider community.
