Autumn Term (I)
Who Am I?

"Who am I" is an essential EYFS topic that helps children explore who they are, build self-awareness and celebrate their uniqueness while developing a range of skills across the EYFS framework. This topic creates an inclusive and engaging environment where children learn about their own identities, families and what makes them special.

Through sharing stories, photographs and favourite activities, children develop their Communication and Language skills and build confidence in speaking and listening. Activities like creating self-portraits, family trees and "All About Me" books foster Personal, Social, and Emotional Development, encouraging children to express their feelings, understand emotions and build positive relationships.

Creative tasks such as making handprints, crafting family collages and exploring music and dance support Expressive Arts and Design while enhancing Physical Development through fine motor activities. Children explore Mathematics by measuring their height, comparing hand sizes and making learning relatable and fun.

Understanding the World is enriched as children share stories about their homes, cultures, and traditions, fostering respect and curiosity about diversity. "All About Me" offers a wonderful journey of self-discovery, confidence-building and connection, setting the foundation for a positive learning experience rooted in understanding and celebrating what makes each child unique.

Autumn Term (II)

Traditional Tales

"Traditional Tales" is a rich and engaging EYFS topic that introduces children to classic stories such as The Three Little Pigs and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. These well-loved tales help children develop a love of storytelling, strengthen communication skills, and build an understanding of narrative structure, character, and moral lessons.

Through role-play, story sequencing and retelling activities, children enhance their Communication and Language development, learning to listen carefully, recall events in order, and use new vocabulary with confidence. By discussing the actions of the pigs, wolves, or bears, children also explore decision-making, problem-solving and consequences in a meaningful way.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development is supported as children consider themes of kindness, honesty, and making good choices. Role-play encourages cooperation, turn-taking, and empathy as they step into the shoes of different characters and reflect on how others might feel.

Creative opportunities abound in Expressive Arts and Design: children can build houses from a variety of materials, act out the tales in small-world play, or explore textures through art and sensory activities linked to straw, sticks, and bricks. These experiences also strengthen Physical Development by encouraging cutting, sticking, building, and fine motor control.

Mathematics is explored through comparing sizes of bowls, chairs, and beds in Goldilocks and the Three Bears, or by counting and sorting materials used by the pigs. Children can experiment with shape, space, and measure while constructing houses or using positional language in storytelling.

In Understanding the World, children investigate building materials, test their strength and durability, and make predictions about which might be “strong enough” to withstand the wolf’s huffing and puffing. They also explore real bears and habitats, comparing them to the story characters, encouraging curiosity and critical thinking.
