Religious Education (RE) at Tirlebrook Primary School
At Tirlebrook, our Religious Education curriculum helps children understand the diverse beliefs and worldviews that shape people’s lives. Using the Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus, we give children the chance to explore key questions about what people believe, why they believe it and how these beliefs influence the way they live. Through learning about Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and a range of non-religious worldviews, children develop respect, empathy and curiosity about others.
RE is taught through engaging, well‑planned lessons that build knowledge step-by-step. Children learn through stories, artefacts, discussion, drama, art and real-life examples, helping them to make meaningful connections and remember what they have learned. Vocabulary is introduced progressively so that children become confident in using accurate, age-appropriate religious language. Whenever possible, we also use our local community - such as visitors and places of worship - to bring learning to life.
Children record their ideas in a variety of ways, allowing everyone to show their understanding. Teachers use ongoing assessment to ensure all pupils are supported to achieve well.
By the time they leave Tirlebrook, children have a secure understanding of different religions and worldviews and can talk thoughtfully about key beliefs and values. It is important that children develop important skills - such as critical thinking, respectful dialogue and reflection - which help them grow as responsible, considerate members of society and prepare them well for the next stage of their learning.
The Right to Withdraw from Religious Education
At Tirlebrook, we believe that Religious Education (RE) offers children a valuable opportunity to explore different beliefs, reflect on their own ideas and learn about the diverse world around them. We aim to make these lessons inclusive, respectful and accessible for all.
Parents / carers have the legal right to request that their child be withdrawn from all or part of RE lessons if they feel this is in their child’s best interests. If you are considering this for your child, we warmly encourage you to speak with Mrs Smith (Headteacher). A conversation to discuss your thoughts and any concerns you may have can help ensure families have all the information they need and allow us to work together to support your child in the best possible way.
