INTENT
At Tirlebrook Primary School we have designed a bespoke curriculum that enables all children to explore, enjoy and excel in the learning together.
We believe that Design and Technology should provide children with a real-life context for learning. At Tirlebrook Primary School, we want to enable children to aspire to be more through creating opportunities for them in the wider world. Through the DT curriculum, children should be inspired by engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with a real-life purpose.
As a result, the delivery of our Design and Technology curriculum will not be restricted to direct teaching, but also indirect teaching enabling children to transfer Design and Technology skills to other areas of the curriculum to make meaningful links and connections.
It is our intention children are encouraged to use and express their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We recognise design and Technology prepares children to deal with tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. It encourages children to become independent, creative problem solvers and thinkers as individuals and part of a team. Through a variety of creative and practical activities children become confident innovators and resilient risk-takers. It enables them to identify needs and opportunities and to respond to them by developing a range of ideas and by making products and systems. Through the study of Design and Technology, they combine practical skills with an understanding of aesthetic, social and environmental issues, as well as functions and industry. This allows them to reflect on and evaluate past and present technology, its uses and impacts.
Children develop a positive attitude by learning how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative and articulate through teaching a wide range of vocabulary associated with the skills and techniques of DT.
We believe that at Tirlebrook Primary we provide a fun, engaging, high-quality DT Curriculum that provides children with the foundations for understanding the world now and in the future.
